Fifth eruption in the region
A powerful volcanic eruption has struck south-west Iceland, prompting the evacuation of the small town of Grindavik. This is the fifth eruption in the region since December, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency.

Electricity and water is gone
The eruption has caused significant disruptions, with power outages affecting Grindavik and all but one road in and out of the town blocked. The Svartsengi power plant, which supplies electricity and water to thousands of people, has also been evacuated. As the magma approaches Grindavik, officials urge residents and nearby residents to flee the area and seek safety. Scientists predict that the eruption will continue for an extended period, marking the beginning of a new volcanic era that could last for decades or even centuries.
